Seems to me that the change to EFI technology has made the problem of getting a decent mechanic worse. Carburetor models are easy to work on and most owners can pretty much look after their machines themselves. EFI is a whole new ballgame (I admit I don't understand it, but then I haven't needed to yet)
I suspect the older "traditional" mechanic is in the same situation to some extent. The modern technicians who do understand it are perhaps not so used to the older machines (or, indeed, don't even have the spanners)
