Converting to kick start might sound fun but not if the electric starter works properly. The EFI has both, it may well start first kick in the morning but not if you stall in traffic. If you are in an embarrassing situation it will refuse to fire up on the kick start and I'm sure it does it on purpose. The kick start does work but it is more there for show.

If it ain't bust don't fix it. You will want to do an oil and filter change, do that, you will learn a lot about the state of the engine from that, and what needs fixing. It is a simple engine, fix what needs fixing not what doesn't.

What ever you do to it won't turn it into a fast sports bike. It will never cruise like the Vulcan but it will go round roundabouts.

Well, I've changed my mind about removing the electric start at least.

I figure I can just relocate the starter button somewhere out of sight if I so desire later on... (I'd like to get rid of the modern controls somewhere in the future, which is what sparked this specific want originally.)

And I also noticed that the beltdrive conversion doesn't fit ES or left 5 speed bikes, so that's out of the picture as well...

I've also cut the choke lever, I figure it's best to let the bike come fully to its senses before riding it anyway...

Some "upgrades" are thus being removed from my shopping list, and I've been adding some spare parts instead. (Oil filter, oil, spare chain and sprockets, ...)
