Update:
Almost entire electrical system replaced.. few slight issues with timing I'm working out to get the new EI set just right; have made timing marks on the new stator/rotor but can't get them to line up with the adjustment available on the EI baseplate, think I need to move the EI rotor slightly from where I set it. Can tell it's not quite right, went from a ride and low range wasn't as sharp and torquey as normal. Full advance felt better but not normal though. Know I am aiming for 12 degrees for idle and 32 for advance. Pretty sure the marks I made are good (used timing disc kit from our hosts)
I am working on a wiring diagram of what I have done so it may be of potential use for others who end up needing a simple rewire. An unintended result is I have lost the needle deflection on the ammeter used to find TDC. I have a feel for it now for starting so it doesn't really matter but it was a useful feature. I seem to be getting the correct readings from Powerbox and Alternator but the Ammeter is not reflecting these and it almost seems like the centre 0 reading has been moved to about +4. Is it possible for this to happen? Bear in mind that my catastrophic short seems to have affected lots of other parts of the bike.
Can't believe this whole episode started with just trying to find the fault with the headlight...the result a heady mix of incompetence and overconfidence. Still, you dive right in and learn a lot about your bike's electrical system! I really like my hidden kill switch at least!
