Gentlemen, for my 535 ex-iron bullet (now alloy barrel) I went through the same expensive agonies of trying different silencers (I agree with ALE), finding they make the bike go better (after carb adjustments) but hating the extra noise. I've recently bought Mr H's reverse cone megga. Looks good (its a bit shorter than I wanted) but it fitted easily. It wasn't quite as loud as my shorty silencer (91007) which was offensively loud even after I had welded 3 shorty baffles together! BUT, the packing was a single layer of glass wool that started to blow out and was all packed down at one end after 10kms, so I replaced it with stainless steel pot scourers, as suggested by MarkM a month or so back,, which I tightly wired in place. Cuts the sound a bit and doesn't blow burning wire wool out the back (that was really exciting). But still not really acceptable noise level.
I have found several examples of silencer sound videos on you tube, but they are all tested differently. Since so many of us go through this issue, couldn't our hosts plan a video in which they show how the different silencers sound at different throttle levels on the same bike? That way we can appreciate how one silencer is louder than another and thence be probably more likely to buy another to get it right than simply drive slowly to avoid annoyance? Thanks ChrisD
