Oh I do like this site, instead of saying how good these bikes are you post pic's of blown engines and how unreliable they are. So Alan.r do you know what caused the piston to fail? And what crank is going into it?. Hopefully I wont do that to an engine but will have to wait and see. The 65 I have seen is totally standard and 4000 miles on it. How does 2.5k sound for one it's mint condition.

Sorry NORM----------- that didn't come across as intended...What I meant was that given the known weakness points with these modern Enfields the owner has to adopt a bit of a pessimistic viewpoint, otherwise he's going to be forever disappointed....Wasn't meant to be a swipe at your good self ( DESPITE the cricket !!) Ha-ha...LoL

Ah-------- yours slipped under the radar just then, DAVIE............For every 1 person that's been on here with tales of woe down the years there must be hundreds who haven't...Most who come on here, or forums like this one, do so either to ask for advice ( As in your case--) or to tell others of problems they've encountered and how they've overcome them.......I posted that photo just to show you what happens when a perfectly standard piston "just let go"....I've had a 65 a few years back and currently run a pair of Classic 500's....If that 65 is actually bog standard then there are a few things you'll need to ask about before you even buy it }--------- a) Has the cyl. head been exchanged for a factory recon. one ??( There was a job-lot of "Home Market" heads that were inadvertently fitted onto European Market machines at the factory (Mine was one such bike)...... b) What gearbox sprocket is fitted ?....The standard one was 17t which is ok for India but undergears the bike for our type of roads etc....( Along with the PAV removal a 19t allows for reduced engine RPM at cruising speed ).......................... You mentioned you were a Mechanic up to a few years ago ?? ..... Was that a Motorcycle Mechanic ??............If so then you'll need to upgrade your tool-kit to include BSW , and UNC sizes as well- ( A couple of Adjustables will also be handy)-------Starter motor sprag clutch can be expensive to change (£60 or more)---------------------- I see you say you don't take advice so just view these remarks as experiences gained whilst owning/riding...and then decide from that.... Can you post a photo of the actual bike concerned ??

Davie - ignore the negativity. Norm and Alan R are unquestionably very knowledgeable but I am reminded of my old man who is an outstanding engineer but who looks for problems rather than seeing the objective. I bought an 04 classic iron barrel Bullet and thrashed the pants off it, taking it up to the north of Scotland and more, doing 5000 miles last year. It was properly looked after and broke down, a few times, but only due to electrical shorts caused by the previous owner fitting an ill-fitting side panel that cut through wires due to vibration. It was a blast, went like stink, sounded like a british battleship firing on whoever, and was wonderful to ride. I often thumped along with a wide smile thinking this is great, this is great, with loads of people willing to chat and admire. I sold it in Oct only to reduce the collection down to two bikes - then regretted it and promptly bought the last EFI Woodsman in the UK as I wanted something more reliable (less maintenance, economy and so on so I could ride without thinking about things needing done so much). Bullets whether they be classic or Efi are Bloody brilliant bikes all round. Prior to the Enners I had three Hinckley trumpets - great bikes but fundamentally dull. No tweaking or twiddling required but despite long trips I found myself yawning. I have had Velos and currently a Norton Atlas and Sunbeam S8. I wont go back to modern bikes as such, by that I mean Hinckleys - let alone any other brand. Something about Enfields that get to you, and I suspect you are bitten - so just do it, don't worry it will be fine. Come back to the forum for technical questions or more, and the guys here are great. At the end of the day, those that post negatives, or problems - well, they still have Enfields. Why? Because they like them.

Davie, don't be alarmed, I have a box of pistons jut like the one in Alans pic lol and more floating bushes, with no whitemetal at all and conrods than I could be bothered to count(some broken ones as well with cases to go with the broken rods) but push on regardless and enjoy the ride

Alan R sums it up perfectly - for the hell of it, which is surely what it is all about. BTW Alan, my Woodsman has the same black 'n chrome tank as yours but it also has horrible large tank pads held in by a screw and when you take them orf it exposes the shortened gold lining. That is fine but I want to plug those holes, not with the screw but with something else that fills the hole discreetly. Any thoughts? And no, I don't want to buy a new EFI black and gold tank!

Gee Sophie, and I just went to all the trouble of welding in nuts so I could put knee pads on an old Electra tank so I could put it on my fake 54 Bullet. Fake only because I want to put it on Club reg lol
