PS---------Have just re-read that advert and as any good litigation Lawyer will tell you "Never make definitive statements"------ That should really say}--"May help towards an enhanced performance"--ie}The point being that it is not JUST this filter by itself that enhances performance, but in conjunction with other alterations/adjustments as well............

Well that's encouraging Alan, thanks.

I'm going to have a go.. can't help but learn something new. Looking for those jetting tables now..

Sorry Alan, I should have replied properly to your question. Yes, it's a bog standard indian bullet 500cc from 2005, looks just like the one in your picture. Yes, the choke lever sticks out to the right of the carb.

I can't help but wonder what size jet I have in the carb now? Presumably it's as it left the factory. The previous owner bought this machine as a last fling at life, did only 1750 kms on it before he got too sick to ride it further. It was stored for 8 years until I bought it. I can't imagine he did any mods on the bike. I had to set the carb up when I got it just to get the tick over right, so I presume it was still running on the factory compromise settings.

I found the jetting guide in H's catalogue. Any suggestions now?

"Any suggestions now?" - yes, give it a go. Re-reading the post it does all sound a bit complicated but I'm sure no one here meant to dazzle you with diamonds nor baffle you with bullshit! These machines are so simple even your granny could do it and they are also very forgiving whilst you are tinkering and trying to get it all to come together. Be aware that it won't end with a new filter though, there is a nice shiny new exhaust to consider, then maybe a "period" type saddle, maybe a brake mod or different gearbox sprocket or bin the casquette.... The list goes on, browse the parts catalogue and get out the plastic matey! Unfortunately though, unlike with the boozers, gamblers or druggies, there is no Enfields Anonymous to turn to, just us sad old gits here!

Here's my two pennorth on these matters;
1) I started off with an unmodified '89 350. Thus it had a teacaddy air filter with nothing but tools and some electrics in the RH toolbox and a standard exhaust.
2) I pretty soon fitted a conical filter and sporty pipe, and re-jetted. Louder and faster!
3) But I believe that IT'S THE PIPE THAT MADE THE BIG DIFFERENCE.
4) I think that the old-style tea caddy is pretty unrestrictive. If you didn't change the pipe, you might get away fitting a conical filter without rejetting. But that may not apply to the later-style teacaddy+filter in toolbox.
5) It was slightly counter-intuitive for me to have to rejet to suit the pipe because once it gets to the pipe it's been through the carb. Nonetheless it is so!

I'm inclined to agree regarding the exhaust,John. The later ones in particular with the "pseudo catalyst" blocking the downpipe are real performance killers. Binning that downpipe (and the PAV)for a staight through one is a must. That does lead to a huge drop in back pressure (It's not just for 2-strokes!) to keep the charge in the combustion chamber though so re-jetting is invariably required. As we've seen, one thing leads to another.

I've just spoken with one of the hi-tech gods at H's. Talk about helpful.. wow. I'm impressed. And that takes some doing.

They have advised me to re-jet accordingly:

Main jet: 117,5
Needle: P0
Pilot jet: 27,5

.. and while I'm at it, I ordered a blanking kit for the tool box.

The order was placed over the phone. I'm not used to that sort of service. Over here, one would have to confirm with emails or some such documentation.
As I said, I'm impressed. Hopefully this will be my set up and I should be good to go after reading the tech notes on how to strip and rebuild a carb.

Comments? Anybody..?

The thing to remember is that NO two Enfields are alike so all figures are just recommendations for starting points, there may still be minor adjustments up or down, so go to it mate :) If you don't have it already, hopefully Mr H. will send you a hard copy of the parts catalogue too - it's essential bedtime reading. Looks like you've embarked upon a rewarding and frequently frustrating voyage of Enfield improvement!
