Looking at the wiring diagram again with your info in mind, it is all making more sense. Black battery lead should go to shiny bolt hole behind battery carrier (what is now a vet obvious frame earth) but nothing goes there. Instead black goes to starter (connected to engine, in turn resting in frame, making a poor earth??) and positive goes via solenoid to starter motor. What I can't understand is how things have worked for so long without a proper earth? Now... do I reinstate a new earth (using what gauge of cable) or leave things? The pictures in my service manual suggest a very different looking neg cable running to starter and my current starter neg following a different route (presumably to the earth point). To fix or not to fix...

hi michael ,i drilled a hole in the mudguard and ran the wiring through a grommet to cure the rubbing inbetween the plastic & steel ,i also fitted a lucas style525 new in our hosts book ,i made a aluminium mount to fix to the holes where the horrible square lamp fitted mycustomer /buddy thinks its the dogs and i must aggree this style of lamp was an original fitment to a 53 bullet according to mr pitmans book of enfields atb paul.
