Also, 15 horses is really not much power. Any hill or headwind is going to make it struggle.
That 15 horses is at the crankshaft remember. You will lose some in transmission.
If that was the problem, it should smoke, it does NOT smoke, and has much less power the smaller 13hp/188 engine it should replace.

On many diesels I have worked on, there can be an adjuster between the fuel pump cam and pump plunger and very often, there would be no clearance between the cam [at no lift] and the pump plunger, which would be partially lifted, even when not raised by the cam lobe - is there any provision for adjustment of this on your engine?

You can adjust the hight of the pump, hence adjusting the timing. The Winsun single diesels are a clone (bigger bore/stroke) of the Yanmar L100, maybe this helps

No, that's the only thing i did not do.. i am hesitant top remove the injector because;
- i cannot believe 7nM is enough to secure it again?
- I did it before with an other engine, it had a teflon 'sleeve'in the head which damaged in the process, could not find a replacement..
I figure the copper rings have te be reheated before assembling?

I could try to find a new head gasket and remove the head incluse the injector.. but that is..
