Id have a look inside. I found this lot in my '94 500 and it was running fine. Admittedly you'd know about it if there was this much missing from your piston but the bit you found may just be the tip of the iceberg.

Success. My first ever image. 2mm x 2mm x 0.5mm or thereabouts. Good idea re purchasing the circlip. I think I'll do that. Cheers

Yep best thing to do, that doesn't look like an internal circlip?, So unlikely to be from the piston, nor is it part of a piston ring.

It might have fallen in during an overhaul in the past; somewhat similar to a surgeon leaving things inside a patient when sewing up.

I'm not familiar with the C5, but to me the metal bit looks just like part of the circlips keeping the LH main bearings in place on a Bullet engine. Maybe it's the same on a C5 engine?
