Use a beeper to tell you when the indicators are flashing. Inside the casquette, it won't show visually, of course.
I've used both these successfully:
Either a proper one from Hitchcocks, that counts the number of flashes, or a dead cheap one, eg Piezzo (spelling?) -perhaps in a pair - one left and one right. Select the one(s) with the best sound for you (Or more clever electronics, using just one, that I don't really understand).
I find the ammeter backlight ideal as a main-beam indicator: Lights up the ammeter out of town where it's dark, and off when in the town.. where you can see the ammeter with the streetlights anyway. (As mentioned above).
