In my case, the bike came to me with the brake link rod mod. already carried out by the p.o.
It didn't take long to discover an unwanted consequence of drilling out the top trunnion is that the upper cam is then able to stick/fail to release fully, irrespective of what's happening with the lower cam.

Tim, sorry I cannot let your view on the brake mod advocated by Hitchcock pass with out comment. “The method of adjustment as advocated by our Host is highly erroneous, and was written by some well intended but complete misguided individual who had little comprehension of mechanical drum brakes “. Whilst I understand you have “some” experience in the motorcycle trade I doubt whether it is equivalent to the collective wisdom of the Hitchcock’s staff particular as this wisdom has been largely focussed onto one motorcycle brand. Secondly, whilst the brake mod may not be technically and academically perfect it has stood the test of time providing many ( I suspect hundreds if not thousands ) riders with a simple and effective improvement on the standard factory front brake. Guys, it's not worth falling out over! The mod makes initial setting up easier, but once set - and once set should usually not be touched for life of shoes - it makes no difference IMHO.
Of course if one cam sticks this is a different fault and should be dealt with appropriately.

It all depends on if one wants excellent brakes or below average brakes?


Many years ago (10 or 12?) I offered the following wager to any and all on a yahoo RE group list. (No one took me up)


Come to NZ for a months holiday, I will provide two otherwise identical bikes RE's for us to use to tour the country, both fitted with the same RE 2LS front brake.


Both to have brand new front brake shoes fitted. One brake set up by my preferred method, the other as per the Drilled trunion and randomly set levers. Both brakes to remain untouched for the duration of the tour. (About 4000km)


At the end of the months tour of the country, a simple side by side brake performance test to be run. (Best out of three if you like ...)


IF the Drilled Trunion and randomly set levers brake is the better brake and out-stops the other bike, I will pay for ALL expenses of the holiday!


If the mis-matched lever set up is the better, you have to buy me a beer and admit that the method I advocate is the better...
