Have you checked your throttle cable for lubrication and correct adjustment ??.........If you have a VM 28mm Mikcarb then go to page 18 in our hosts 2017 / 2018 catalogue and re-jet your carb according to their recommendations.....Please bear in mind that these are a starting point only and you may have to adjust richer / weaker depending on what you find on a test run.....I normally start at + or - 10% then later at + or - 5% for a bit more accuracy........As an example if your main jet is a No. 100 then 10% of that = 10 so add the two together for your new jet size ( In this example that comes out at No. 110. )

..You must also check that your float is correctly set for height and that the air slide is initially set in the No. 3 slot of the jet needle......Standard convention has No.1 slot at the top of the 5 slots so you start off at No. 3 initially......

Do you find those handlebars improve the overall handling ??..........This is my 4th RE Bullet and second time I've fitted those bars and both times have enjoyed the improvement....Looking at your photos you have a VM28 Mikcarb, the "Tea Caddy" style air filter just fitted, and the original standard silencer........Looking at Page 18 and the 500cc VM-28 jettings, I think the one that is closest to you is}------- S & B air filter with standard silencer....In this case we can take the phrase "S&B air filter" to mean any of those low resistance filters, including the one in our "Tea Caddy" type......So you need to have}--- Main Jet = 117.5, ..... Needle jet = PO, ......Pilot Jet = 27.5, .....Slide No.3........Remember, these are just the start settings and you may have to do some slight "tweaking" to finally get a good set-up.....Make sure your points gap is ok, along with timing and tappet settings also....

Hi Alan thanks I will take the carb off and check it. I am pretty sure the previous owner didn't rejet the carb for the cone filter and just stuck it on for the look. He seemed to be fond of using guttering as there was a bit of guttering covering the ignition coil to hide it and half a bit of guttering screwed to the cone filter as a rain shield. ;).

I need to check the plug as well as have not had it out yet. In the spare parts box there are a couple of irridium plugs from the last owner and I know from experience they can give less of a spark for some reason.

As for my idle taking a long time to settle I think I have found the culprit as the throttle cable is sticking. The bars are much better than stock and suit me as I am big. The mirrors work better with them and they feel sturdier. They are 800mm wide 93051 in hitchcocks catalogue.

The cable is pretty tight when it comes out of the top of the carb; it's not just been slightly moved when you put the new filter on, has it? And catching on the tank or something...

It would be worth checking its routing where it emerges from the carb. A tiny bit wrong and it makes a difference and it's easy to nudge it right again. Good luck, Chris
