Read the post and quickly ignored its contents! yes, removing the studs and twisting the barrel to break the seal would do it.

Stinkwheel - the threads in the crankcase for the barrel studs are 5/16" cycle thread [26 tpi] and not M8. Regards, Paul.

They're 5/16" up to July 2002. M8 after that.
