A 2003 model 500 Bullet would have been supplied with points as new, regardless of whether it was kick or electric start.

Yours **might** have had electronic ignition added by a subsequent owner. The Electra-X model (2004-2008) which was the first RE model imported into the UK with electronic ignition, which continued with the EFI models.

Just a thought, what size (how many teeth) gearbox sprocket does your have? 17T is standard, sometimes owners fit larger sprockets for better economy, but it has been known for owners to overdo it, if yours has a 19T sprocket an un-tuned engine it won't pull well in top gear. even an 18T could be too large if, like me, you have more weight and sail area giving the engine a bit more to do.

Papasmurf thanks , I am not sure but it definitely smells like petrol.

Adrian thanks, I took the cover off today and the previous owner must have changed it to an electronic ignition because it has no points. I am 11 stone and will definitely check to see how many teeth it has tomorrow.

I went for a good 20mile ride this evening, tried the choke on when it started struggling to check if it was running lean but that made it worse, so I think it must be running rich. I'll remove the jet tomorrow to check what size and add a few smaller sizes to my next order.
