Claude,

are you using the original carburettor and exhaust on your 500 Machismo?

Hi Adrian, not exactly.. I have a Mikuni TM32 with a tailor made inlet pipe, an "Ace" air filter and a Goldstar exhaust pipe. If I had to change something, it would be the carb, that I'd swap for a VM32, as I find it too sensible to temperature variations (continental weather...)

Maybe the temperature variations depend on where in France you are. It's a long way down from Dunkerque to Nice.

If you are thinking about changing the carburettor, the cylinder head needs very little porting work to take a 36mm carb, and with the free-flowing exhaust the 500 AVL engines run very nicely with one of these. I have had good results with the TM36-31 Mikuni as well as the PHF36 Dell'Orto. You don't even have to modify the head, as Bullet Whisperer's 100 mph Electra-X with a 36mm Amal Mk2 proved.

That said, the VM32 is still a very good carb, this is the dyno print out shared on another forum for another 500 AVL Electra-X (same engine as yours) running a VM32 and a set of Hnery Price's "R" profile cams.

Hi Adrian,

Thank you very much for your power report, and too the wiring shema (I forgot last time) ! I live by the german border, in Strasbourg,so with temp variations about 45° between winter and summer (continental weather...), and sometimes, 25° variations in the same day. That's why I thought the flat throttle valve carb, witch is more sensible to those variations, isn't the best choice for me, but I live with... For the moment... When I made my inlet pipe, I remembered what you wrote about the 36mm carb. It's true there isn't a lot to put out the head. I Think I'll do that when I'll change the crank bearings, included the crankpin assembly I saw somewhere... A good beginning before going to further power quest..
By the way, have you worked on the inlet pipe lenght ? I made mine longer than the original, to have a bit more flexibility.
Thank's for all. Claude

For the most part I used a Yamaha XT500 rubber carb mounting flange modified for the 60mm centre mounting screws on the RE head (The XT500 has 70mm centres, performance has been fine. I discovered afterwards that if you are considering using a Dell'Orto PHF carb, there is a Malossi mounting rubber that fits straight on.

There is presumably nothing to prevent experimenting with spacers provided there is still room to fit the carb between the engine and the air filter canister, which you have done, though the TM32 carb is slimmer than the round slide versions.
