I had a V50 for many years using it daily for work in winter. When I thought it was getting on a bit I sold it to a bloke from work and he then carried on using it for many years and it never need any engine work at all so keep it as it should last forever. The weak point was the switches but easy to fix usually. He said it was the best bike he'd ever had! Keeping it would allow you more time on the road riding than in the garage I bet!

Yes the switch gear is pretty crappy. I had an issue with the starter relay losing voltage. Finally wired it so the starter motor is live all the time, the loss occuring in the ignition switch. Works fine now but iI would have liked a backup kickstart.
