One of the reasons I "doubled up" on the cables on my Electra X is that particularly in the case of the clutch cable it is a petrol tank off, and in my case because of the low home made seat a remove the seat job, cover for the electrics off job.(Non standard part.) It would be major operation for the roadside. The really difficult bit and what the cranked long nose pliers are for is to detach the cable end from the arm inside the casing after you have removed the small cover with "5 speed" on it.
You also you need to make sure you have all of the cable removed included the broken bit or it turns in to a fishing expedition or the outer casing of the gearbox off job. (Fortunately I did not have to do that.)
