As I said Reg, copied and pasted from the makers web site and if the maker describes a self tapper like that why would I disagree?.

Mmmm, I've always considered a self tapper to be one that cuts own thread, not it's own hole (though there are screws that do that)

What is a self tapping screw? Self-tapping screws are fasteners that are designed to drill their own hole as they are screwed into wood, plastic or metal. By using a screw driver and self-tapping screws, precisely fitted threads are created. Self-tapping screws are ideal for items that require regular maintenance and work well when working with two different kinds of material being fastened together.



These screws either come with a blunt, flat, sharp or piercing tip. Sharp-tipped self-tapping screws drill their own holes in softer wood and plastic. However, it is helpful to drill a pilot hole when working with harder material. When drilling a pilot hole, make sure to use a smaller bit than the screw so it may still serve its purpose.

Wow - I never thought my mere mention of the dreaded 'self tapper' was likely to spark such debate [sorry Dennis, you seem to have landed in the middle of it]. Perhaps someone with better pc skills would care to put a picture or two of said screws for clarity [or lack of] and poor old Mr Black only wants to fix his switch assembly, not fasten a brake caliper on !! This could easily turn into a four pager at this rate, folks !

Unfortunately Paul that is the way this message board is going, too many contributors with fixed ideas who have more interest in proving their own superior intelligence than learning anything.

Dennis C, on a personal level I am somewhat concerned at the number of people who buy an Enfield who have no spanner wielding skills, or mechanical skills at all. (Which can end up being very costly.)

Ah well, I'll just keep calling them self tapping screws and self drilling screws.
(Like Screwfix do, and they do sell an awful lot of screws)

Yes Pete, self drilling screws are a different thing to self tappers and are designed for single use as removing then in most cases will destroy the thread.
