It does sound like head gasket which is cheap as chips. Job is straight forwards, boringly simple actually

If it was the piston/rings you would have heard it, and maybe had a partial seizure.

Get your trailer and bring the bike home. Then think about the next move. There is a lot of help here, particularly the Bullet whispering fellow. You're in Leeds, reckon there are a few folks around that part of this septic isle who might help :)

Great thanks for the support!

So if it's head gasket - how long would it take to a) diagnose and b) fix?

It's worth a try to get the guy to at least diagnose it then best case he can fix and I save a bit and ride it back - think positive!

funkyorange - It would be best to fetch the bike yourself, don't let the dealer guy touch it or he'll charge you labour, which is far more than you would pay for a new head-gasket!

The job isn't too complicated but as Beezabryan said, get the bike home first. Then decide as it does indeed sound like a blown head gasket from your description. Good luck!

Hi FunkOrange

It might be good idea to be part of vintage club if available near your area. you can try to learn things yourself slowly. or. you can always get help with club member as well.
and this forum is amazing as well to discuss any issues

All the best ...

HI Funkyorange I live 25 miles from this dealer in Perth he would be my local dealer if he was any help, he seems to want big bucks for everything that's why I bought my Cgt from a dealer 200 miles away because he is no help at all, so don't take his word on anything, It would be best to get this bike home, take head and barrel off to see damage, maybe just piston failed so piston, rings and cylinder need replaced not that expensive, If I can be of any help to you let me know cheers.

Hagis - thats useful to know! As far as I can tel he just looked at it ans assumed it was bad and not worth it. He was suggesting a new engine! Then saying the old enfields are no good anyway! Nice guy though but perhaps the advice was not sound.

Barnes - I just confirmed a quote for 160 to get it back to mine. This for the mileage (282) miles seems reasonable.

Paul M H - Brilliant I will check the instructions out.

enfield_trials - Yes thats a good idea. Its really good to be part of this community and everyone seems really helpfull! Thanks all!

funkyorange, I assume that having paid out a fortune for roadside recovery, that you will now join a recovery organisation or get insurance with breakdown recovery as part of the package.
