Too early in the morning! Please ignore my post as you've already seen Hitchcocks technical notes.

To make up for my silliness may I suggest a .002" feeler gauge (or the thinnest if using metric feelers) is a good substitute for the old cigarette paper. None too many people smoke or do roll-ups these days, plus paper tears a feeler gauge does not.

Transistor radio tuned "off station" gives a nice click when points open - ignition on of course - that way you can be focusing on tdc tool whilst using ears to listen!!
It is always best to time at full advance, holding cam round against springs (8.5mm or 32degrees)
