Gaz, I bought one of the LED pilot light bulbs but didn't like it, too directional and didn't light up the whole headlamp so I took it out. When one of the LED 'tiger eyes' failed [see above] I fitted it in place of the failed one. They are brighter than the tungsten bulbs but nowhere near as bright as the 'kit' LEDs.
The 'kit' LEDs are a single surface mount LED array on a small circuit board with a reflector & magnifier glued into a plastic housing with a ceramic resistor in the wiring.
To answer the other part of your question, yes! you can fit the bulbs into the existing bulb holders and I may do that as the jury is still out on whether the 'kit' ones are too bright.
