Simon D, a revcounter (tachometer) helps because it tells you how fast the engine is running and therefore enables the easy setting of the tickover.

I fitting one to my Electra X(ish) because I personally think the suggested tickover of 900 rpm is far too fast, and the engine will tickover quite happily and reliably at 720-750 rpm.
