big al: I'm with Presto on this. The "correct grade of oil" in the four speed gearbox is, in fact, grease.

Big Al. I also had to go the grease route on my 1996 iron barrel. But last year I bit the bullet and had the sealed bearings installed together with new bushes. Now it runs on 20-50 and a dash of molyslip. Magic gear changing now.

Penrite do a sloppy grease specially formulated for leaky old gearboxes. My Connie with 4-speed box has been running with this for several months and it's fine - no leaks and works fine!

00 grade grease is the stuff. Castrol still make it. I used to purchase litres of it from a yacht winch maker here in Auckland as Castrol only sell it in big drums.

There must be millions of motorcycles and machines which use 00 grease in the gearbox, some don`t even have seals. If the box is leaking when it never leaked before; fix the problem. If there is grease in the box from new, use grease, the machinery was designed to run in it and it won`t hurt it at all.

Penrite 00 is the stuff to use , jet black and needs a bit of thinning with engine oil to get the stuff in , my box does not leak after o ring and main shaft seal were replaced with new bearings and lay shaft bush fitted , I washed the felt seal for the sprocket and put a blob of epoxy resin over the bush gear operator pin screw which can weep when hot . 4 speed boxes were made with grease in mind , will last for years .
