I do hope Revband is just being pessimistic ;-) Did you hear pinking? Loss of filter will lean it up but not by much. But piston damaged might account for oil blowing out of pressurised crankcase. Piston/ring damage could be foreign object ingress. Been there, sounds horrible but it's not the end of the road. All fixable but does need eyeball inspection.

"Dots of oily mess" is not the same degree as, "the amount of oily mess" to me. The former is trivial. I get mess on the centre stand and rear rim thrown off from the chain and up from the road on my completely oil-tight uce.

Double check the tappet clearances. Exhaust in particular.


Make sure the decomp lever has free play and is not kinked under the tank someplace?
