Yes, that's the tool. Not really necessary unless you do this regularly and even then, a length of 1/2" hex bar is cheaper.

If you use the footrest stud be sure to place a large washer and nut on the end, because if you accidentally loose grip of the stud when in the fork tube ...................its a long way down to get it back! Don't ask me how I know this!!
Luckily the stanchion was well on its way and loose enough to turn by hand when I 'lost' mine.
I've welded an old 1/2" socket onto a hex stud bar especially for the job now, I can get some good leverage on this, and it save's a lot of hassle trying to re-locate the footrest bar through the under frame parts.

I was going to say get a piece of hex bar and create the tool for the job..

Reason being a few people have tried the foot rest stud and have found it a heck of a job to replace from whence it came.

Probably because it does get slightly bent out of straight supporting the weight..

I think the radiator allen key is about four quid, AND it doubles as a radiator allen key if you ever need to put an extra radiator in you central heating system.

Dan - did you get this done? I've got to replace my fork legs after an accident and the only thing I've found out which hasn't been mentioned here is that the lower yoke clamp bolts have to be slackened and the clamps possibly wedged open to allow the stanchions to turn. Apologies if this is stating the bleedin obvious, but it's the sort of thing I'd forget! Snidal's manual Ch 7 pp95-100 covers it.

I've been that busy this week that I haven't had time, hopefully tomorrow I'll get some time. It's the last part of the dismantle and I need to get all things ready for powder coating next week - not that the forks will need it.
I'm using the footrest which is already slightly bent so our hosts will be receiving an order for a new one at some point in the rebuild.
I'll report back....
