Mines now done over 10,000 miles and works well, about 5 mph over true speed. At around 4K it started waving erratically so I stripped it and gave all the workings a tiny smear of HMP grease and it's been great ever since.

As regards the indicator warning lights, I read once that if you can see the indicators, a warning light is not necessary. I wouldn't think a neutral light is required for MOT, so that just leaves the high beam warning, which I would think is required. The general rule for all the lights is if the lights are fitted, they have to work, and if you remove them and go for a daylight MOT, the switches have to be removed too!

Hi, Strangely speedos are not part of the MOT test. There is no procedure to see if they work.

I recently fitted Thumper up with a GPS (Tomtom Rider). My speedometer is crap. According to the GPS....


Considering that we are in the 21st century, one would have thought that a better speedometer wouldn't be too hard to design, build and manufacture.

I tested mine over several runs against a GPS, and plotted the results. On mine the speedo was 5mph fast at a true 30mph, and 3mph fast at a true 70mph. There was roughly a straight line graph between those two points for 40, 50 and 60mph.



I was expecting a fairly complicated recalibration job, but I realised I could get pretty damn close with little or no trouble. I took my speedo to bits and moved the needle back by 3mph. Now it is 2mph fast at 30, and cock-on at 70 (with a declining error between). I was pleased at such a good outcome for a trivial amount of effort.

Oops - I forgot to mention that I had to move the needle stop so the needle pointed at 0mph when stationary. Very easy - just a metal strip that you bend with a pair of small pliers.

Thanks for the Info,
My bike does not have a Neutral light. Anyway, but I'm sure the High beam and indicator repeater light are required, even though with new bulbs I can't see them in the daylight
But I did not want to modify anything that can't easily be put back to standard .
I have ordered another Smiths replica Speedo and hope that one is better!
I am not too worried about a little over reading , but was hoping for a steady needle rather than one that waves around like the factory fitted one does.
I may well take the old smiths one that doesn't work properly apart and have a play with it .

Having used the sat nav in my car , I find that there is a similar speedo error on that and that is certainly a lot more high tech than the bullet.

However the Smiths Replica. Speedo and the Lucas Ammeter certainly do look the part on the bikes as opposed to the standard items.

Well, I ordered another speedo yesterday, thanks to Hitchcocks Excellent service. It was delivered today and I have just installed it.
And it is not doing what the other one was, so I guess it was a faulty one!
