Hello again gents, ok so having established that the nut on either end of the main shaft it tight it only leaves the main shaft bearing that is causing the end float on the main shaft, so I have removed the offside gearbox cover, the main shaft cover, the nut that holds that end of the main shaft in place, now I'm a bit stuck, please can someone tell me how to with drawer the main shaft bearing so I can replace it with a new one?

Ps almost forgot, it's a 4 speed gearbox, and thanks for all of the replies.

Bertie,
I'm not sure how you are getting the endfloat in the mainshaft and how you checked that it was endfloat unless you had the clutch off and were able to detect movement in and out in the shaft. If you are happy that the bearing(there is only on bearing on the mainshaft and that is in the gearbox end cover) and you say you have removed the cover, with a propane torch heat around the bearing and tap it out. same to refit the new bearing

Thanks for your response.

Yes, I removed the two hex. screws securing the cover, obviously, but the "small register" and possibly something else (like Loctite, maybe) prevented my removing it - short of probably destroying it, that is.......

Hi Norm,
Yes your right I have had the clutch plates out, with the clutch out I can see the whole clutch basket and the primary chain gears moving in and out when the clutch lever is pulled, have checked the nut on either end of the main shaft and they are tight so can only assume that he bearing needs replacing.
Havnt had time to do anything else so far, will keep all intersted parties imformed as I find the fault.

Bertie,
I have found one where the sprocket would move in and out a 1/4 inch because the bearing was moving in the housing. New bearing and Loktite fixed that but you say the mainshaft is moving so the only thing that can allow this is the bearing in the outer cover has failed. This is not a big job because with the clutch off, clean the shaft and you can pull the mainshaft out without pulling the gears out once you have the inner cover off.Personally I would replace both bearings but up to you, neither is a big job

Well without parts I couldn't do anything anyway so for now Bertie is back in one piece and enjoyed a nice 4 hour ride around the country side today, not sure when Bertie will be repaired but he behaved very well today and the gear change was acceptable although not perfect so am going to leave well alone for now.

Thanks for all the advice though gents..
