Gordon, your uncanny deduction of identification of location is pretty spot on - confirmed by the address shown on board on first pic! I agree it looks a "health and safety" nightmare.... wonder how many fingers it claimed in it's life?

P, you could be right about the power steering. There are a couple of bevel gears on the crankshaft and engagement with one or the other would give anti/clockwise rotations of a sprocket turning the steering wheel via that chain. Well, that's my theory anyway.......

Hi guys-------------- MIDGE, that's an ENFIELD Ho2 diesel.....I operated and worked on those during my time in the RN..Have a look at this}----- http://www.oldmarineengine.com/discus/m ... /1897.html ------- .Originally fitted in a ships pinnace ( long boat) attached to a KITCHENER RUDDER ----- have a look at this}----- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kitchen_rudder ---------- The craft, (full of hairy stokers going "ashore" for some Horizotal refreshment) can be bought to a stop from full-ahead just by closing the scoops at the right moment, then shutting the engine down to idle...(Been there--done that !!)..It would need a GRUNDA-esque style of SUPER FRAME to house it and I suspect a fluid flywheel plus direct shaft drive to make it work......But just think of the TORQUE that's available ??????
