Oh dear, here we go.......
No, they're not British - obviously.
BUT they are not replicas either.
RE India never stopped making the 1950s Bullet to the (almost)same specs and design as the ones made in England.
That's not a replica in my book.
The English ones were probably better made though.

Come to think of it, it's like my Honda is a replica 'cos it was made in Brazil.

hi pete i think your honda is a honda any enfield made in india after kit bikes from england were no longer sent over are replicating the original english product and as we all know there are subtle differences in various areas also enfield india were never part of the english company if my memory serves me correct they were called madras motors making an obsolete product as the english bullets changed in style in the late 50,s i also seem to remember that they were called enfield india because someone else owned the royal part of the name which was bought in the late 90,s so i,m afraid to say that an indian enfield made after the english parts ran out are actually replicas of the original english design ,and style ,whereas your honda made in brazil is made by honda , but in my opinion none of this makes any differance to the owner of any indian enfield the only guys who get hot under the collar are the staunch english enfield owners of a certain age ,i recently bumped into someone of a particular age and his comments on my bike were its a nice replica now i will go forth and replicate!!!

Yes Grunda.....but, when Enfield India started manufacturing, rather than just putting together British parts, they did so with the manufacturing rights, jigs, dies and tools sold to them by RE. This makes them a bit more than a replica in my eyes. RE (England) were partners with Enfield India in the enterprise with India owning more than 50% of the shares as was a necessity under Indian law at the time. I think they carried on making the "obsolete" model because that was what they wanted in India.
Anyway, as you say, it's all by the by and I'm just glad I have a nice sensible simple bike which I can easily maintain myself but that previous owners haven't stripped all the threads for me ;-)
