Hello again Bullet train---------------- my offer to borrow my standard V28 carb off my runnng bike still stands but ----------- where are you ??? Can't help if I can't get it to you, old son.  This video diagnostics is a great idea. I take it the finger gestures were to indicate the choke position and not telling the cameraman to "go away" as it were. LoL

Cheers Riggers and all others here. Logically, this should be a  quick and simple fix, but, Indian logic is another matter?

To Alan R, I'm in Maidstone, and it would be good to compare another carb, as I'm still not sure if something is missing. Send me your landline No. and I'll call you later in the week. 077 22 37 99 33.

Much finger wagging indeed and much more head scratching?

At this rate I wont make it to the other side of Maidstone let alone Overland to India......

 Bullet,

Firstly I would get rid of the hose to the inlet flange, pull the pipe out and plug the hole with a screw or a sealed pop rivet. Then if no joy pull the carb, use the technical notes to guide you through the procedure then try again. Make sure the pilot jet is clear, I'm tipping a problem there

Hi matey----Yes, as per Norm's last posting I also wondered about that air line still connected. This is like being an On-line diagnostic surgery----only for Bullets etc.  So, please take just a few mins. to fully outline exactly what set-up you are currently running. Do you still have the  PAV set-up in place or just parts of it eg. that air line going into the bottom of the inlet manifold.  All these things do have an influence, plus I need to know so that I can set the appropiate jetting before lending you the carb. I'm happy to send it to you----all I ask is you pay for the posting ( £4.99 each way by Collect Plus courier to your door --includes £50 cover.). I'll txt you later this evening---

--------------- just as a "quickie" ( We all love those, don't we ??) put a clamp on that plastic pipe coming out of the bottom of the inlet manifold.   Now try starting again. NO GOOD ?? leave the clamp on-----remove the flexable hose from the tea-caddy to the carb, try again. NO GOOD ??  Leave the hose off--- Drain the float bowl,  Set-up a remote fuel supply( using known new, clean fuel---) to the carb. and try again. NO GOOD ?? You have issues with the carb. NOW}---  send for International Rescue  ("Distressd Enfields" division). and I will lend you my spare carb----simples !! Notice I didn't say "rent" ??      Er, gee Mr Tracy, that's er, very good of you. Think nothing of it, Brains----Now, how do you count backwards again--?? Oh yes,  5---4---3--    Hope that's got you smiling a bit ??  If you ask me it's more of a challenge driving through Maidstone than India. Do you know of a firm called "Maidstone Engineering?"  Give those a go---see what we get, eh ??

Can i have a guess please? doesnt it sound like our bikes just before you manage to fumble the reserve tap on. Usually pulling away from traffic lights with a large truck right behind, or is it just me?  Ok so you've had the carb cleaned and rebuilt. Was this by prof company our yourself? Some thoughts. Have you/they replaced the brass washer/spacer that fits behind the main jet. if lost the jet will be too high in the carb body. Next remove the float and float needle. Examine the small spring loaded pin located in the needle assy. This should be free moving when pressed and spring out again when released. if not then use carb cleaner and work it untill free.If stuck fast then replace. This is a vital part of getting the float at correct height. which it sounds to me is why there is not enough fuel in the float bowl for the jets to pick up. Reset float height to 24mm (without gasket) The brass tube which supplies the enricher/choke extends lower into the bowl and can pick up fuel. Hense okish with choke and struggling without. There is also an o ring on the pilot air screw also under the knurled cap on carb top, check for damage and replace. Check numbers stamped on jets to make sure they havent given you one from a lawnmower. If they have mateys mower is turning out 15 brake horse and ripping the grass to hell.

Thanks to all for the latest suggestions to cure my problem. Will have another go on Thursday, suffice to say, the fuel was fresh (10th March) and the PAV was binned 18 months ago with no adverse effect at all, with the vacumn tube plugged off. I will follow through with some of your suggestions and, fingers crossed, will get this sorted. I will say one thing, the engine noise/note appears to me to have changed, more muted than it was before, and certainly less "tappy", as the inlet tappet was well loose! This less noisy state was noted on it's last run, dare I say it, a sort of "strangled" state. (Dont mention Amal/Free flow Exhaust?). I will keep my faith in the Indian metal.....

Ahhh--- naughty Mr. Bullet train. Any suggestions given are usually with the "understanding" that all other settings, values etc are correct. Please check your tappet settings again before anything else.
