Phil, good that you're getting close to an answer! Plug colour sounds not too bad, although you haven't said what type it is? I'd try Iridium if you can get them, there's a good chance it will improve tickover as well. The valve additive is probably unnecessary and might contribute to that plug sooting.

I think my whole coil system is weak , I've never had an impressive spark and the gossip tells of the Iridium plugs improvement but if our hosts could make a smaller crank ignition system that allows the alternator to be used or even a mini alternator , being self generating no battery is needed .
I find Bullets a rather sooty engine but could helped running on E85 fuel , I have larger jets on hand but I feel the mixture should be tweeked for idle pick up with number 2 slide .
My 1995 valve seats have taken a hammering on the exhaust , it was punching it's way to my new oversize exhaust valve so I add valve saver to give me a little longer till I change to new harder seats . My plug is an NGK B9ES .
