Thanks Dennis. I have already resolved that now. I didn't realise that the shrouds should be removed. It seems obviois now. Here they are now fitted in all their glory. The shocks still arn't right though. I've put the old oil back in (although I'm sure there's not enough, are you just meant to measure the quantity you put in or fill them right up? Maybe there's a drain plug somewhere?) Still no joy though. They feel awful and bottom and top out EASILY with clunks top and bottom. Something is seriously wrong. Rebuild time. Again, tips welcome. Thanks.

Hi MATT,----- not long ago I fitted a pair of Hitchcocks gaiters to my Classic 500 and used part No.146167. They are advertised as being for the "later" bike BUT both ends have a large diameter opening that just SLIDE gently over the lower slider and the shroud cover--- after cutting 1" below the lower yoke as JOHN J says. No need to remove any part of the casquette, nothing gets in the way of the fork travel either and no gap above the lower yoke. I'll try to post a photo for you........

You do need the correct amount of oil in - it's not just there for lubrication but is forced through small holes to cause the damping. There is no drain except the bottom domed nut.

MATT---------you say "I undid the steel forks by hand"----that's the stanchions I take it ?? They should not have been that easy to undo. Our hosts supply a VERY substantial tool for this job..... Equally you should have tightened them to a given setting ( The value escapes me at the moment)... The fork oil quantity is 200ml (ie 200cc) per leg (dry)........... Do you have MAN 16 ?? all the values etc are in there.

just looking at the photo of the fitted gaitors,and note this is not being clever or causing offence but..inbetween the nacelle and the bottom yolk i can see exposed stanchion why not use the plastic spacer and cut the covers down to cover up the exposed stanchion bolted on to the yolk,thats what i did when fitting gaitors just a thought,atb paul.
