Well, spent the morning in my workshop (shed, really) experimenting with the single LED indicator mod. I got it going OK by using a pair of blocking diodes (thanks PeteF), but I'm not happy that the bezel containing the diodes are in fact waterproof!!
So I had a close look at the existing warning lamp (bearing in mind I fitted the upgraded 21w flasher and lamps from our hosts). What I discovered was that the rubber lampholder that goes into the speedo has a shoulder on it to limit how far in the lamp can go into the hole. I discovered that the bulb, in place in the speedo, was, in fact, a good 1/2" below the coloured lens, which doesn't make it that visible. So, armed with a chisel-type scalpel blade I removed the rubber shoulder to allow the lamp to into the hole further.
This has definately improved its visibility - but I still wouldn't call in "attention grabbing" - I'll see how it looks on the road before fiddling with it any more!! As for the neutral lamp - the same caviat applies there - probably not waterproof in those chrome bezels - so I may decide to remove the leds from their bezels, which would mean a much smaller hole needs to be drilled - and some Araldite over the leads should ensure no water ingress. Boy, do I enjoy fiddling - dunno how I ever used to find the time to go to work!!
