Hello Paul, --- Blimey !!A 6.51am posting, you're keen? ---nice to have met you an the lads at Mad Mike's do recently. Sorry--- just couldn't resist putting that last sentence in--- actually you are quite right of course, the economics do make v. good sense indeed. I was just taking BW's idea a stage further by thinking that if a conversion kit were readily available how many more might be tempted to go for the Compression/Ignition route ?? I know I would. can you give a link to some diesel sites to have a look at the various options available ?? I'm planning a week-end ride to your neck of the woods next spring so will call-in and buy a pint!!

Hi Alan R and Les, what I had in mind was to keep the carb and petrol system [because it's already there anyway] and IF this thing fired up on petrol and kept going when switched to diesel, that would be the first hurdle overcome. The throttle slide could meter the air intake [as on my old Transit, although I have virually jammed that fully open], a dual throttle cable operating the carb slide and injector pump throttle control. The standard bottom end will handle 10:1 compression [perhaps not for as long as 7:1, mind], this ratio might be somewhere in the zone for the engine to run on either fuel. Different ignition timing requirements could be handled by two switchable cdi boxes, giving different timings and advance curves, as required - remember, the distributor would probably have to go to allow an injector pump to be driven at half engine speed, which brings me to either an Electra or an Electra X as a possible guinea pig, with their crankshaft ignitions. The Electra X has a good combustion chamber with squish band and flat top piston, but the head would need drilling for an injector to go in, also the timing side idler gears would need reinstating to drive an injector pump. As for what anything like this may run like [if at all] is anyone's guess, but I have an open mind about it for now. Paul.

I did read your comment a few times before responding Grunda but sometimes what is intended is not easily converted to print.......I have been guilty at times of not using the right words to write what I mean...........A good case for an "edit" facility?........I am sorry for being sharp but diesel exhaust & me are not the best of friends......I jacked in working in London 15 years ago and to give you a clue about my present whereabouts - I called in at MadMikes Meet at 13.30 on my way home from a BSAOC weekend camp in Cumbria. Rode 45 miles north afterwards........Thread hijack over :)
