I usually use an old engine/footpeg bolt and I leave the flanged nut on one end.

Now that’s a really good idea with the hose trick! I read somebody’s advice on here about be careful not to let the hex bar drop down the fork leg but still managed to screw up and do it!

Luckily after a rummage in an old tool box I found that I actually already had 2 pieces of 1/2” hex bar so that got me out of trouble - moral of the story always rummage in your old tool boxes before buying more stuff!
