Winkie, don't tempt fate because one day you may wish you only had a rattle

I would give another head a lash if I came across one but this one is so thoroughly overhauled now with new guides and seats that unless its the rockers I can't see how it can be anything up there. The fact is the noise happens completely independently of the idle. There is no change in performance or engine rhythm. http://youtu.be/EOC1a3zPQm0 I post it again so you can hear for yourself. It actually sounds more like the timing chest that the head which is why I started thinking about the followers and if they perhaps run in a sleeve that may start to float.

When I was a lad, "having a rattle" was a euphemism for something completely different. It's been so long I can't remember quite what now though!
I have n't got a rattle either winkie but I do have a very high pitch ringing sound when I give Ethel-the-enfield some wellie, puts me in mind of a 70's jap stroker so I'm guessing it the cooling fins vibrating. Do those rubber gizmos I see on new Enfields, presumably to stop the vibes, actually work? Do they stop the noise and are they available for iron (barrelled) maidens?

Hi guys-------NORM, I went up to the bike, gave the rear end of the chain guard a delicate "touch" with my dainty size 10 Highway Boots for MEN !!! -------noise gone !! .............. SIMPLES, really. And yet I couldn't replicate said noise with bike on centre stand etc... it only happened when out on the road. Have just enjoyed 30 miles of NON Shee-Shee running. And now I can hear all the other clanks---groans---wheezes----scrapings----but enough about ME !!

Simon,
Could be on the money, loose tappet guide. Bit of a pig to change. When I turned the cast engine guides to fit the Electra cases I got one a tad loose, bit of Loctite tap the guide in and not a problem, till a mate crashed it last week.

Good oh, I'll investigate further. Perhaps a wash with methaline chloride and warm with a heat gun will expose the offending item. With any luck I might be able to glue it down in situ with loctite. I'll report back. S:)

So Norm, I've had a look at the tappet collars and can't see clearly how they fit. From the tappet adjustment window they appear to be threaded iron tubes running down into the timing chest. When you remove them is it an upward or downward extraction. I'm trying to find an exploded diagram but so far no joy so any explanation would be appreciated. S:)
