Another option is to have the existing condenser replaced by one mounted externally when having the rebuild. In this way any future issues with the condenser can easily be resolved. If it were me, though, I have to say that I would opt for the Thorspark. Basically it is a DIY installation of an electronic ignition system that retains the outer shell of the magneto, but replaces the points with a pickup. You can retain manual advance and retard if you wish or have automatic a/r. Several K2F twin owners in the classic bike club I belong to have fitted these and been greatly impressed by how smoothly their engines now run. For one thing the infamously inaccurate cam ring necessitating evening out of the timing on each cylinder is eliminated and the system is wasted spark so the timing is identical on both pots. The system is relatively cheap, saves an expensive rebuild and yet still looks original, though there is a discrete ignition key. Also it uses little power and can be obtained in 12v and 6v, negative or positive earth. A no-brainier IMHO unless an absolutely standard machine is wanted.

The Bright Spark web site has detailed instructions for isolating the old condenser and fitting a new EasyCap item in the points housing, if 1) that's all it needs, and 2) you fancy tackling it!.

The Thorspark could be a much cheaper fix, provided you've got a healthy charging system, and you could save for a proper magneto rebuild at your leisure.
The old girl is turning into a money pit!

Yeah, they do that. In some cases it's known as a rolling restoration!

Many thanks guys, I am looking into the Thorspark offering and reading some really good stuff about it so I think I will give it a go. As far as the "money pit" grumble goes, its not an issue if I can break the lock off Mrs B's Purse
