Good afternoon all,
Having got the above to run (after a fashion) all be it with some carburation issues. I have found that the engine smokes very heavily and does not clear after running it for a bit. I am far from being super knowledgable with these things but would assume that the cause is either piston rings, valve guides or both.
Now, I can do many mechanical jobs myself but feel that delving this deeply into engine build territory is a little beyond me, I just wouldn't know where to start.
Can anyone recommend anyone who would be a good bet for a rebuild on this engine or indeed someone who would like to enter into negotiations about taking the job on for me.
Many thanks in anticipation

Hi Dai,
Many thanks for your reply. Unfortunately I am in Doncaster and in this current climate of covid 19, it could be difficult to get over there, I will keep you guys in mind for the future though..... :)

Hi, check your oil return is working as a restriction in the system can cause smoking also what oil are you using? Bear in mind that it can take quite a while to clear a smokey engine even a thimble full of oil can produce a good cloud that would do credit to a warship! Vince

Just a thought
Does the super meteor have the same type of oll pump as the bullet?
If so it's not unknown for the oil pumps to be fitted the wrong way round, the bigger pump goes on the scavenge side then feeds the top end if fitted with the smaller pump scavenging it will over oil the bottom end as the smaller pump can't keep up
Or it may just need a few heat cycles to settle the rings or shake them lose

Take care all Dai

Vince, Just using 20/50 at the moment and like your thinking with the oil return, don't have any history of this bike so dont know how well its been looked after.

Dai, looking at the parts book on-line it would appear to have much the same setup as the Bullet, the pump at the back is 1/4 inch and the one at the front being 3/8 so it is definitely worth checking this before getting to far into it. looking around the bike it would appear to have been subject to a bit of a rebuild but not brilliant in places.......

Many thanks gents

Hi, twins use same type pumps but have different system. Feed pump supplies to big end and rockers , return just scavenges the sump. The Team 700 racer smoked initially but stopped when changed to SAE 50 oil. I remember in the 70s my Connie started smoking badly but was traced to a gob of gasket goo stuck in the return pipe at the timing cover gasket joint. Vince

The saga continues..... So, I've now had chance to have a bit of a play and on taking the oil pumps apart have found them to be correct and nice and clean is no foreign bodies or metal filings. Before taking the pumps apart I took out the oil strainer and the oil that came out was full of bits of metal (large iron filings if you like). When I have had the engine running it does not sound like the bearings have gone but smokes very heavily. Any ideas?
My thoughts are that it will need a proper rebuild which is beyond me I think, I am in Doncaster and would like some recommendations as to who would rebuild a 700 twin..............
Many Thanks
