I tend to use my 612 pretty hard - well it would be rude not to

Anyone who has one will know how freely the engine revs and I am a bit paranoid about revving it too hard in the lower gears, so I bought myself one of those small digital tachos that run from a wire wrapped around the plug lead - seems to work well enough to be able to keep an eye on the revs, no point in going beyond about 5800 RPM.

Readout is pretty stable most of the time.

The one I fitted is called a "Waterproof Searon Backlit Digital Tach Hour Meter Tachometer 2/4 Stroke Engines" - look it up on E-Bay not bad for £20 in my book - added bonus it keeps track of the length of time the engine has been running.

Hope I have not broken any board protocol here and sinicere apologies if I have as I know our hosts supply electronic rev counters.

Just so I understand, knowing Hitchcocks sell an electronic rev counter you post about about the benefits of a cheap eBay item and then ask if it is ok to do so. Would be interested in your thought processes that bring you to the conclusion that it is ok to do this

As I said apologies if I have broken any protocols.

I am sure that I am not the only person to have posted information about something obtainable from E-Bay.

Quite happy for our hosts to comment and will abide by what they say.

I have said my piece.

Having just compared the two products I see a proper analogue dial with a needle, compared to a set of tiny, constantly changing digits running off a coin cell.
I suggest the former would enhance any traditional bike whereas the latter would be as much use as a chocolate teapot.
Don't think Mr. Hitchcock will loose much sleep over it. :P

I fitted one like Andy's to my 625.
It works fine.
Clearly, the Smith's electronic tacho is in another league and I don't think our hosts are likely to lose any sales from this discussion.

I fitted the Smiths tachometer to my Electra(-X) in 2006. It will probably outlast the bike. (Then it will be transferred to my Beemer which probably will not have a working tacho from ten years on.)
From this I know rev limiter calls it a day @5400 rpm.
(I wrote this only to be able to use "@" properly)

The Bullet didn`t need one; at 1500rpm the handlebars vibrated, at 2000 rpm the seat vibrated, a 2500 the footrests vibrated, at 3500 my teeth vibrated.
