Hi,

I am trying to remove the magneto sprocket on my 1956 500 Twin which is attached to its Lucas MN2l Magneto. It is a tapered sprocket (http://http://accessories.hitchcocksmot ... 2-1200.jpg).

Can anybody recommend a tool or technique to help me remove the sprocket so that I can set the ignition timing.I have loosened its retaining nut successfully.

You need the extractor, it is in the Accesory Catalogue here under Tools l think. Do not use an ordinary puller unless you are very confident! REgards, Mark

On second thoughts, MN2L? Hmmm, l'm not sure that's the same extractor as our Hosts sell. I suggest contacting them on the phone. REgards, Mark

Colin, I just had a look at the parts book, I think it may actually be the same extractor tool as for the manual advance-retard Bullets after all. But you will need to check with Hitchcocks. I was basing my initial comment on my memory of my 1953 700 Meteor but that has a different arrangement as it has a distributor.

Thanks for your help. I phoned Hitchcocks and as advised I can now see the inside of the sprocket has a thread and they sell a tool that should do the job.

The workshop manual speaks of a two legged puller but I just couldn't see that there is enough clearance to fit the legs behind the sprocket.

That is the magneto sprocket extractor that I referred to in the first place after all! The 2-legged puller they are talking about is designed to hook over the sprocket teeth. I have one but I'm never happy to rely on just the teeth to carry that load.

Tool received today, 30 seconds, sprocket now loose! I can now set the timing.. hooray!
