Rattlebattle, we have essentially the same bike. How did you "derestrict"?

I essentially need to learn more about working on bikes. Can do some stuff but want to learn more.

I have entirely solved this thorny issue by exclusively purchasing my motorcycles in derelict condition. I can't remember ever purchasing a machine that didn't require bringing home in a trailer. None of these vehicles has been subsequently fault free but none have given me the burning bile of rage that I've had from the one new vehicle purchase (car) I've ever made and the endless and totally unsatisfying battle with the repairs and maintenance under warranty. I for one will never buy a new vehicle ever again!

Nottsblue, why don't you just call the dealer you are hoping to use in the future and ask?

NottsBlue, as standard the C5, like the other current RE bikes, is restricted in the sense that the engine doesn't deliver all its available power because it has to meet noise and emissions regs. On these bikes, for which as far as I know the ECU cannot be directly remapped, there are two basic options to liberate more power without updating the engine itself. The more usual method is to buy a Power Commander (or the cheaper Dobeck). This piggy backs on the ECU and allows the fuelling to be altered. The options here are either to buy our host's PCV with a map already tested on a dyno or to instal the PCV and put the bike on a dyno to set it. Most use the former option because few radically change the engine sufficiently to warrant serious tuning, certainly on a C5. The other option is to buy our host's carb kit (what I did). The jets etc will be supplied according to the exhaust and air filter and of course changes can easily be made. As stock the bazooka exhaust is probably the most restrict part. Whilst you can just put a less restrictive exhaust pipe on and not bother with the ECU, more performance will be liberated if you change the restriction on the inlet side too as the power is gained by getting more fuel into the engine and then getting the exhaust gasses out. I opted for our host's British chrome silencer and matching chrome exhaust pipe. This, together with the cone air filter on the carb has resulted in a more lively, louder and less constipated engine. People can and do grind cams and rework heads for these bikes, liberating a lot more power but IMHO that's not what the C5 is about - the frame, suspension and brakes get a bit marginal at the top end anyway. If I were you I'd get hold of our host's splendid catalogue in which there are many goodies (or go to the website).
Hope that helps.

Is there not a third destrict option? That third one being in line with the Watsonian approach to their EFI Woodsman - namely a decent exhaust system designed for the efi. I dont believe there is any need for money to be spent on power commanders and all that gubbins. With a few oil changes, by 5000 miles the engine will have settled in nicely and freed up a couple more bhp. Less carried weight is also a bonus. So for not a lot of ££ you can give the EFI a decent boost without interfering with the engine.

In the UK, and I dare say in europe, you can take the bike to any VAT registered dealer/mechanic, but must use original parts.

As for naming and shaming, if what you say is true, and you can prove it, go ahead. Having had a load of "bother" (a stronger word is needed here) with several official Land Rover dealers, they deserve everything they get. It's still a lot easier to find a bad dealer than a good one.

Tut-tut, naughty-naughty Sofiaspin ( Chuckle, LoL) ---- unless you and Nottsblue know each other ??........Was the "Less carried weight" was meant to be a back reference to the Watsonian Woodsman exhaust system in that it is physically lighter as well as being de-restrictive--- is that correct ??

Hi Chris------ I think you have the KEY phrase when you say}--- " and you can prove it " but then that is the hardest part of all ie}--- What constitutes "Proof positive" within these type of circumstances ???........I would ask you all to re-read my earlier contribution, especially the offer of me giving you full details of the situation I went through...
