I just want to get away from the open springs a) for ascetic reasons and b) for practicality / cleaning etc.

Not too bothered about fitting original shocks per se.. Especially in light of their design faults etc as you've outlined.

Allan H has told me in an e mail that the correct length should be 290mm so I am going to opt for adjustable enclosed Hagon shocks.. Apparently the later "Armstrong" type with the knurled adjusters, as fitted to the Super Meteor and Constellation etc are likely to snag on the Meteor frame.

Because the .shocks are too long and the shrouds probably won't fit..

Tom, I don't know how heavy you are but I've always found Hagons standard springing too hard and I'm 11 stone. I'd buy your shocks direct from Hagons and get them to fit springs one increment softer than their standard fitting. I've had a 53 Meteor and a 53 500 Bullet both fitted with rebuilt original shocks and they worked fine although the damping was borderline. As rebuilt by Falcon Shocks the competition people they were fine and never leaked but that's re-engineered with modern seals. And Hitchcocks are quite right, clearance is marginal between shocks and frame.

Hi Mark I'm 15st but I am 6'4" .. I bought the bike a while back and have just got around to sorting it...I have no idea what make the shocks are other than they are not standard... They are way too long . So much so that a previous owner has had to fit extension blocks under the main stand for it to touch the ground... Even with these the wheels are both firmly on the ground...

If you are a member of the REOC you can advertise your shocks for a swap on the Club Website. Why not try it?

Just as a matter of fact guys - I have measured the shocks on a very original 1953 700 Meteor ( you know it Mark ! ) and the rear shocks are as Allan says - 290 mm

7. Copy and paste the code into your message, and type < b r > < b r > (WITHOUT any spaces) after it for a paragraph break.
