My motorcycle and I have just been granted a ticket to ride!

Image
BOAT byway permit, yay!

What are the recommended knobbly tyres for a bullet? I did have Ensign universal on Thunderbolt but was wondering if there was anything better? (standard 19 inch rims)

Image
Here, young Thunderbolt sports a tasteful set of Ensign universal tyres.

So I was just wondering which would be the best for traversing the ancient rights of way?

Tornado takes a moment or two to take in the scenery.

Scaly you could get tyres with the tread blocks in the shape of roman sandles that would be appropriate for your roaming around . I uaed to run trials universals similar to the ones in your pic even chen sheng were not to bad on the road. Happy Christmas to all may your bullet start every time.

I run Dunlop Trials Universals on my Works Rep 350 Bullet but these are very "period looking" and probably (!) not as good on-road as modern types. Lots of folk use the Bridgestone Trailwing series for mixed use, plenty of different types in the range. Simon, explain more please about the permit business? This is new to me, is it just a Kent thing or national?

I have Continental Twinduro TKC 80 110/80 19" front and rear on my Electra X (ish) BUT it is tight getting the front wheel past the nuts on the mudguard stays when taking the wheel off and back. (I have to line up the nuts with gaps in the knobbles.) However the tyres are also available in, 100/90 19".

Kent has a permit for some of it's byways. They have gates on. Neat!

Below, the late, great Sven takes us down one.

there are various ways to look after byways, restricted width, permits, etc. see the link below that shows you the ones with restrictions, the permit ones are a little way down and are always followed by a page of type.

I have on the rear of my Electra an MEFO EXPLORER SPORT TYRE, This would be a Enduro tyre so has a nice chunky tread that is good on forest tracks ect, And it has good road holding on tarmac, hums a little at 50 MPH but this goes away at 60/70 mph, so this tyre has been a good choice for winter use.

The main idea is to stop some elements from abusing the byways...

Sensless

Stupidity

Or just use the acronym:- S.C.R.O.A.T.S

Stereotype scroats include land-rovers fitted with exhaust snorkels during a heatwave, supermotard and trials bikes with no number plates which smell of candy or testosterone, white van man dumping asbestos, building and other rubble.

Byways are nice, I have already taken Tornado down some of them, even with avon slidemasters. At least the permit system helps keep them nice. see the vids on my youtube channel...
Scaly's substantial youtube stuff Just scroll down the page a little until you see about 5 satellite images, they are the byway vids as shown below.

I must say, regarding the comments on the film, I'd be pretty miserable too if confronted by bikes doing those speeds down that sort of road. Given the number of pedestrians, the possibility of unrestained children, other bikes, bicycles, dogs, horses, twats in landies etc., surely a speed little more than walking pace would be more appropriate (and for me at least, a lot more fun).

I hope you meant Sven's video?

I a responsible member of the TRF (Trail riders fellowship) and we have a very strict code about speeds, stopping for horses, etc.

Thanks for the info Simon. I'm not sure if we have these restrictions in Northamptonshire, I've not seen any signs so far.
