You`re lucky, we always ride this way. Nylon plugs can be used in place of metal clips. A lot of cylinders get damaged from circlips popping out weeks after fitting.

Make sure it's in the upper cylinder or jammed between the piston rings and cylinder wall, and it'll be fine. When I first got my Bullet it did 10000 miles like that before someone told me there was a bit of piston slap.

Ed, I think you have got the wrong end of the stick! The cylinder is off, the circlip is in the bottom end, under the flywheels. I too dropped one in there and bought a magnet on a telescopic rod, it even comes with a small mirror to fit too! Took seconds to retrieve the circlip. Stupidly forgot the rag!

I couldn't retrieve the clip with a stick with magnet. I think it was stuck to the left side between the wall and the flywheel. Moved and wriggled the bike, but no luck. I took the engine out, put it upside down, moved it a bit, and the clip fell out.
Actually it wasn't much work since I didn't remove alternator, clutch and primary drive. In 1,5 hours the engine was out, and a little hydraulic platform was handy to move it out of the frame.
A nice lesson to not forget And I did immediately fill the crankcase cavity with a big rag
