My Electra X is shooting oil out of the chaincase breather. I have followed all the advice re the main breather and I had placed the chaincase breather over the rear chain but it covered the rear wheel in oil. There is enough oil spat out to cover the rear wheel after a 15 minute ride. Any ideas?

As Papa says. Check the engine oil level. There isn't that much oil in the chaincase so it could be coming from the crankcase via a defective crankshaft oil seal.

Quick way to prove this would be to drain the chaincase, take it for a run (will be OK without oil for a few miles) then drain again to see if any comes out.

Graham - go to P8 Timing Cvr on the parts book for Electra X and I'll lay even money its the silly little washer on the oil pump spindle thingy which has gone, allowing crankcase pressure to blow oil into the timing chest and thens back up the pipe and out over the back wheel. happened twice last year to my mate's Sixty-5. the part is just pence - the hire of the van (twice!) to pick him up const over £200.

Papasmurf,

the end oil feed on the Electra-X is different, there's just the oil seal in the timing cover that sits over the extended end of the crankshaft, neither of which you will see on the classic engine. The Electra-X also has no oil seal behind the crankshaft timing pinion, it just relies on the increased volume of the gear type scavenge pump to clear the sump quickly.

I think PeteF is on the money, if the the oil seal on the drive side of the crankshaft, behind the engine sprocket, has failed you could be getting engine oil flooding the primary chaincase, I'm sure there was another incidence of this recently. A blocked engine breather wouldn't help in this department.

Adrian I only suggested something you should check, that is as far as I went, I made no diagnosis or further comment.
