According to the service schedule, the rubber intake manifold and air hose should be replaced every two years. Is this really necessary please, seems excessive.

No, its not necessary as rubber degrades a lot slower in a temperate climate. Inspect the parts for cracks (you can test the inlet manifold rubber by spraying WD40 on it while the engine is running - if it 'disappears' i.e. gets sucked in then the manifold is cracked and is leaking). The original items on my 2011 C5 were still on in 2016 when I sold it and they were fine. Put your wallet back your pocket . . . for now.
