Imperial of course! We had none of that Napoleonic nonsense until I acquired a real mongrel of a bike that had a real mishmash of sizes & breeds. That is why you see the Whitworth/metric shifter in the kit

Thanks all, especially @nigelphoto for the sizes. @papasmurf I did check the toolkit, but unless I'm missing something, there's nothing big enough to undo the spindle. I'm going to treat myself to a new socket set that goes up to 30 for Christmas and a torque wrench for new year.

@Rattlebattle - if I tighten spindle nuts with torque wrench - do you know the settings I should use? Or which workshop manual I need to buy to find all the torque settings? I'd also be interested in doing the trick with running the engine whilst loosening then tightening the engine mount bolts- which I think also need torque-wrenching?

Thanks Nigelphoto for answering for me; I've caught the dreaded lurgy, so haven't visited here lately. A key nut to keep torqued to spec is the one that fixes the rear brake torque arm to the swinging arm. If it loosens off the rear wheel can lock up, causing damage to the bike and, more importantly, damage to the rider. Although there are spanners to fit the wheel nuts in the toolkit they really aren't long enough. A hammer and chisel might be ok for an old banger (ie iron barrel) but the precision engineering on the superior UCE models requires something more sophisticated. Insert smiley face here - oh no, I can't.....As it happens my Triumph Thruxton has exactly the same wheel nut sizes as my C5, so I just take the same open ended spanners on longer trips. Anything local and it's recovery for me. The workshop manual is an essential purchase; it's not bad but does have some strange terminology and some of the text can be out of order. it all adds to the fun of RE ownership.

Nigelphoto, Rattlebattle, thanks both. Much appreciated. When I looked at the toolkit I was fairly sure there wasn't anything 22/30 sized in it, but I will have another look - maybe I missed something. And sounds like the torque wrench and socket set is a very good idea for Enfield ownership, even if the toolkit does have a short spanner of appropriate gauge. Cheers. Rattlebatte, hope you feel better soon. Tom.
