Hi. I know that I am not the first person to strip the thread on the sump plug bolt (2009 EFI) does anyone have any experience of using the helicoil system that they can advise me on and any idea what size to buy? The drain plug is holding but without the copper washer and I fear the next time it comes out is the last time.

Until anyone comes up with an answer directly, Try the Search box at the top right of this screen. Try typing: Helicoil or Sump Plug Stripped Thread or something like that. There's quite a lot to look through! -Good luck, -Chris

Thanks Chris. I did have a look through, but i couldn't find what I was looking for which is
1) the size of the helicoil kit I might need
2) any gotchas about clearance when drilling through the old stripped thread
3)best practice for a guy who doesn't won a ramp!

I seem to recall someone doing this job and finding that the thread was the same as a sparkplug, ie 14mm? Anyone else remember this? I might be imagining it though. Try phoning our Hosts on Monday, I'm sure they'll know.

Hi I done this recently but my engine was stripped and it was the same thread as spark plug 14mm see photos

The inserts are cheap but the kits aren't. This is a real while-you-wait job for a local garage, if you can get the bike there. Garages get stripped threads often enough to keep the tools on hand.

A local garage wanted £30.00 to do the job! So bought the kit handy if the spark plug or other drain plugs have a problem.

looks a good repair SteveT. do you think that it is possible in situ?
I assume that all you need is the kit you showed and a new 14mm Drain plug and washer?

Hi Kister don't know if you could in situ but I found the tap a bit tight for cutting the thread, so I ran a 13mm drill through before the tap. You screw the insert in by placing it on a spark plug then screwing into the case with some loctite on it, I left the plug in place until the loctite had gone off before removing.
