Found something, go to RealClassic.co.uk and look in Bike Profiles, there's a good one of a 1963 Continental complete with some good pictures of the tank and and some engine strip pictures.

I have checked out the original sales brochure as you suggested and the picture of the 63 continental is exactly what I have, the tank shown is identical to mine but it is not the same as the pictures in realclassic. I think we are getting somewhere, once I'm registered with REOC all may be revealed.
Thanks to everyone for all your help.

Rex, I have some information. Your frame left the Factory as a blue Continental Deluxe on 10/12/1963 destined for Brooklands Motorcycles of Romford. The engine number has too many digits to make sense, does it look like a number has been added or did you just mis-type it?

Mark the engine number looks original I don't think anything has been added it is CL 14414. It is great to get all this information, I presume it was a blue tank mudguards etc with a black frame.
thanks Rex

Rex, I'm just getting the engine number checked, will be a short while. Colour would be Hi Fi Blue I suspect, a really nice blue metallic, I have done my 1966 Interceptor in this colour. As yours is Deluxe that means tank, toolbox lids and chainguard in Blue, mudguards chrome.

Your engine is also a Continental Deluxe, but sadly not the one that left the Factory with the frame. The engine was despatched 8th April 1964 to Hodge of Nuneaton, this bike was also a blue Deluxe.
