In an attempt to reduce the time that the fire brigade takes to reach a site, the Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC) on Monday introduced seven new fire bikes to the brigade.

Currently, the fire brigade takes approximately 10 minutes to reach a site but with the new bikes, the fire fighters are expected to cover the distance in seven minutes.

Each of the bikes contains two fire extinguishers of 10-litre capacity each and a smaller cylinder attached to it, siren and lamps. “The bikes are also equipped with a snake catcher (metal rod) and a ventilated glass jar (to keep the trapped snakes) as we have seen an increased number of snake sightings in the twin cities,” said Gupta. All the bikes are red, as it is the signature colour of the fire brigade, for easy identification, he added.
